OPTION 2
This is a very hands-on package, more tailored to your operation. It includes all the elements of Option 1 and also incorporates a 1-year contract with you to take an active role in the following areas:
Employees: If you don't have a foreman in place, I will help you find one. I can review resumes, check references, and conduct interviews for this position, as well as other positions on the ranch. With years of agricultural experience, I know the right questions to ask, and how to read between the lines.
Purchasing Livestock: I will help you find good quality cattle at a fair price. Inexperienced buyers can get stung. I have a good, practical knowledge of genetics, EPD's, and can help you build a herd that will be the envy of your neighbors.
Herd Health and Nutrition: I stay current on new vaccine, disease and nutritional issues, and can set you up with the most cost-effective, least-intrusive programs, that do the job without going overboard.
Calving: I will assist you in setting up an efficient calving system, and teach you how to keep calves alive and healthy. While the payday for a ranch comes at shipping time, the size of the check is largely determined during calving.
Horses: It's easy to get stung when buying horses. I can help you find good, young, well-broke horses, that not only get the job done, but that you will also find pleasure in riding and owning. I can also help you get started in the horse business, if you so desire.
Machinery: I will evaluate the current condition and types of machinery in place, and help you to purchase what is necessary to maintain the operation.
Crop Production and Irrigation: I will evaluate the current state of ranges, pastures, cropland and irrigation systems, and implement a plan for improvement and stabilization of these resources.
The Community: A big part of the western lifestyle involves working with friends and neighbors. Westerners believe in free enterprise and landowner rights, but are sometimes skeptical of a newcomers intentions. I can show you ways to become accepted, which will make your life easier and more enjoyable.
The Government: Our government plays a large role in farming and ranching these days, especially if your property includes BLM range, Forest Service allotments, or state leases. The NRCS, DEQ, DOT, and even OSHA can affect your operation. I have experience dealing with most government agencies, and can help you cope with them, and even benefit from them.
Quarterly Meetings: I will plan to visit the ranch approximately once every three months, to meet with you and/or your foreman, to discuss and take action on any issues that may have arisen, and oversee current projects. I will be on call at all times, to directly assist in the ongoing routine management.
